Imaginary Cake designs are just as unique as the special person receiving them. We approach each cake as an empty canvas and end up with a truly creative artistic dessert. Creating a one-of-a-kind cake is a process that entails many hours even before the cake is baked. Due to the individual detail that goes into each cake, it is impossible to set standard cake pricing. The best way to find out how much your cake will cost is to contact us at and allow us to discuss all the possibilities for your design based on your event theme, amount of people to be served, your palate preferences and your budget.
We do not have a minimum order amount for our cakes because we feel strongly that everyone deserves to enjoy a unique cake for their special occasion. Something with a little more pizazz than just a grocery store cake. Although we cannot compete with grocery store or big bulk store pricing, we can guarantee that your cake is baked fresh and never frozen, that your buttercream is made just days in advance and not made in a warehouse months ago and shipped in a bucket, and that our attention to detail and unique designs will be second to none!
Why does a tiered birthday cake cost more than a simple round or sheet cake?
Tiered cakes are priced like wedding cakes because they are constructed and designed just like wedding cakes. We price this way because it is not fair to charge a bride more than we would for a tiered birthday cake when in essence, the specialty cakes are created exactly like wedding cakes and sometimes even take more time to design than a wedding cake. They have a sturdier, costly base board in which they rest on, and they have an inside support system that keeps the upper tiers from sinking into the bottom tiers. They also require a bigger, more costly box rather than a typical bakery box.
So, what's the deal with fondant anyway?
Why does fondant cost more, you ask? Because fondant cakes have a layer of buttercream underneath the fondant to help adhere it to the cake, so there is twice the ingredients and time that go into fondant covered cakes. Fondant is a rolled sugar icing, much like sweet edible play-doh that resembles a marshmallow flavor. The taste has come a long way over the years. The texture is what differentiates it from buttercream. Where buttercream is creamy and smooth and melts away in your mouth, fondant is chewed and swallowed. Our team members are buttercream lovers at heart. Unfortunately, a dying breed. We love what fondant is capable of and we use it on sculpted 2d cakes, 3-d cakes and as accents. Approximately 95% of our cakes are buttercream covered. We will never talk you out of a fondant covered cake. But please know that if you are interested or are ordering a fondant covered cake for the mere smooth, flawless look that it gives, we implore you to take a second look at our buttercream cakes as we have perfected the art of smooth buttercream. There is no need to spend the extra money if surface appearance is solely what you seek. We may, however, suggest fondant for your cake if your reception is held outside during the hottest months of the season.
How do you price a 3-d cake?
We price our 3-d cakes based on the amount of time and expertise it takes going into them, especially if there is cake construction and lots of carving involved. For instance, before the cakes are ever even baked, we draw them to scale, using ratios and exact proportions, template after template. This kind of quality takes time, experience, and artistic knowledge. Here is how we usually explain it...you wouldn't be able to contract a true artist to make you a 3-d replica of [insert your cake design here] for any less than $100/hour . It would be way more than that, actually. We also have the added pressure and stress that it is, in fact, cake, so we do not have the luxury of starting and stopping a project of this magnitude and detail. We have to start (from baking) and finish (to delivery) within a matter of three days, four days tops because no one wants to eat moldy cake. That's not a whole lot of time to squeeze the 50+ hours it takes to make a 3-d replica artwork. Our cakes are definitely artwork...they just happen to be edible.
Faux cake vs. real cake?
Most people think using fake tiers saves money when in actuality, styrofoam costs more (usually, it all depends on the size) than the ingredients that go into baking the cake. And then the fake tiers still have to be designed exactly as if they are real cake. That is where the bulk of the cost comes into play...with design. It is standard in our industry not to deviate from the normal per serving price for faux cakes, but we use an 80% formula, saving you 20% of what the real cake would cost for those fake tiers. Think of it like car maintenance. The part needed is far less expensive than the labor for your mechanic to repair it.
Do you charge a fee for your tastings?
Yes, we do. The fee is $25. Our tastings are very unique and interactive and most importantly...FUN! Since we are a custom bake shop and not a retail bakery, this fee covers the cost of the ingredients and the time spent with you to design your cake. However, you can get this fee waived if you decide to go ahead and pay the $100 retainer fee up front prior to your consultation to reserve your date. By doing so, we feel that you are committed in using our services and we will waive the $25 tasting fee. If you should choose another bakery after meeting with us (but we highly doubt that happens), we will refund $75.
